How Much Does a Northeast India Trip Cost? A Real Budget Breakdown

Budget roughly ₹3,500–5,000 per person per day for a comfortable mid-range Northeast India trip based out of Guwahati, about ₹25,000–35,000 per person for a week covering Meghalaya and Kaziranga, excluding flights to Guwahati. Backpackers on shared Sumos and homestays can run ₹1,500–2,500 a day; a private-car-and-good-hotels trip lands at ₹6,000–8,000.

The Northeast's cost structure is unusual: rooms and food are cheap by Indian tourist-circuit standards, but transport dominates the bill because distances are long and public transport is thin. Here are the real numbers, line by line.

What does each day actually cost, tier by tier?

Expense (per day)BudgetMid-rangeComfort
Stay (double room)₹800–1,500 (homestay/lodge)₹2,000–4,000 (hotel)₹4,500–9,000 (resort/boutique)
Food (per person)₹300–500₹600–1,000₹1,200–2,000
Transport₹300–800 (shared Sumo/bus)₹3,000–4,500 (private sedan, split)₹4,500–7,000 (private SUV)
Activities₹100–300₹500–1,500₹1,500–3,000
Per person per day₹1,500–2,500₹3,500–5,000₹6,000–8,000

All figures are indicative 2026 ranges for two people sharing; solo travellers pay proportionally more for private cars, and groups of four pay noticeably less per head. Festival windows, Ambubachi in June, Hornbill in December, push room rates up sharply.

Why does transport eat the biggest share?

Because the Northeast's headline sights are far apart and taxis are the default. Indicative private-cab rates from Guwahati (sedan; SUVs 20–30% more):

Shared Sumos and government buses cover the same routes at a tenth of the price but cost you time, flexibility and comfort. Most travellers land in the middle: a private car split between 2–4 people, which is exactly what our package plans price around.

What do safaris, permits and entry fees add?

The extras that catch people out, with indicative rates:

Where can you save without hurting the trip?

  1. Travel as 3–4 people. The car is the big cost and it divides beautifully, a ₹4,000 day-hire is ₹1,000 a head for four.
  2. Base in Guwahati, not in resort towns, for the Assam legs. City-edge hotel rates beat park-gate resorts, and day-running Pobitora or even Kaziranga is viable.
  3. Eat local. An Assamese thali at ₹250–500 is both the cheapest and the best meal decision you will make, see our food guide.
  4. Time it for shoulder season. November and February–March have peak-quality weather without peak-December pricing.
  5. Book the room and car together. Hotels that run their own fleet, ours included, price transfers below standalone tourist-taxi rates and remove the airport haggle entirely.

Do not economise on: drivers for hill roads, the Kaziranga jeep, or a buffer night before your flight home.

What does a full week look like in rupees?

A worked example, two people, mid-range, the classic 7-day loop (Guwahati, Kaziranga, Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki, as in our first-timer itinerary):

Trim the car to shared transport and homestays and the same week runs ₹15,000–18,000 a head; go SUV-and-resorts and it reaches ₹45,000–50,000. Whichever tier fits, Hotel Shiny Grand can anchor it, rooms minutes from LGBI Airport, fair fixed transfer rates, and a full car-and-itinerary service so the quoted number is the number you actually pay.

FAQ

How much does a Northeast India trip cost per day?
Roughly ₹1,500–2,500 per person per day for backpackers using shared transport and homestays, ₹3,500–5,000 for a comfortable mid-range trip with a split private car, and ₹6,000–8,000 for private SUVs and upscale stays. Transport is the largest single line item.
How much does a week in Northeast India cost?
A mid-range 7-day loop from Guwahati covering Kaziranga, Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki costs about ₹32,000 per person for two people sharing, car and driver ~₹28,000, six hotel nights ~₹18,000, plus food and activities, excluding flights to Guwahati.
How much is a Kaziranga safari?
A jeep safari runs roughly ₹4,500–6,500 per jeep including park entry for Indian visitors, and a jeep seats up to six, so groups pay little per head. Foreign nationals pay higher park fees. The park is open from about mid-October to April.
Do permits for Northeast India cost a lot?
No. Inner Line Permits for Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Mizoram cost roughly ₹100–500 per person and are issued online. Assam and Meghalaya require no permit for Indian visitors, so a Guwahati–Meghalaya–Kaziranga trip has zero permit cost.
