Things to Do in Guwahati in 2 Days: A Realistic Itinerary

Two days is the classic Guwahati allotment, usually the start or end of a bigger Northeast itinerary. Most 2-day plans online cram in too much. This one is built by people who live here, paced around when things are actually open, quiet, or beautiful.

Day 1, Temples, the river, and the best sunset in Assam

6:30 AM · Kamakhya Temple

Start at Guwahati's most important site while the city sleeps. The Shakti Peetha atop Nilachal Hill draws pilgrims from across India; before 8 AM the queue is manageable and the hilltop air is cool. Allow two to three hours including the winding drive up. Dress modestly, leave shoes at the counters, and take ten minutes at the viewpoints, the Brahmaputra spread below is your preview of the evening.

11 AM · Breakfast-brunch and a slow reset

Head towards the riverfront and refuel. Try Assamese staples if you see them: jolpan, pitha, or a proper Assam tea. Rest through the midday heat, this itinerary banks its energy for the evening.

2:30 PM · Umananda Island

From the Umananda Ghat area, a short ferry crosses to Peacock Island, among the smallest inhabited river islands anywhere, where a hilltop Shiva temple has watched the river since the 17th century. The crossing itself is half the pleasure. Confirm return ferry timings before you board; the last boats leave well before dark.

5 PM · Brahmaputra sunset cruise

Book a day ahead in season. Evening cruises depart from the ghats near Fancy Bazaar, and the sunset over the Brahmaputra, a river so wide it behaves like a sea, is the single image visitors carry home from Guwahati. Most cruises run 60–90 minutes with tea and snacks on board.

8 PM · Dinner

End with an Assamese thali if you find one, khar, tenga fish curry, and rice varieties you won't meet elsewhere in India.

Day 2, Rhinos in the morning, markets in the afternoon

Option A · Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary (the one to pick)

Leave by 6 AM for the ~50 km drive east. Pobitora holds one of the densest one-horned rhinoceros populations on the planet, sightings on a morning jeep safari are close to guaranteed in the November–April season. You're back in Guwahati by early afternoon. (The sanctuary closes during the monsoon months; check seasonally.)

Option B · Assam State Zoo and Kalakshetra

If Pobitora is closed or the drive doesn't appeal: the Assam State Zoo & Botanical Garden shows you the rhino anyway, and Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra is a well-done cultural complex covering Assamese art, dance and history.

3 PM · Fancy Bazaar and Pan Bazaar markets

Shop the old city: Assam tea by the kilo, gamosa cloth, Muga and Eri silk, and bell-metal crafts. Bargain gently; prices are already fair by tourist standards.

Evening · Position yourself for departure

If you fly out tomorrow, most itineraries continue to Shillong, Kaziranga or home, spend tonight on the airport side. Hotel Shiny Grand on VIP Road, Borjhar is minutes from LGBI Airport: check in, have dinner from the in-house kitchen, and turn a stressful travel morning into a lie-in. Early check-outs are routine, and direct bookings include breakfast.

Where to base yourself for this itinerary

Both days work from anywhere in the city, but fly-in visitors do best sleeping near Guwahati Airport: Kamakhya Temple is conveniently en route to the centre (30–40 minutes), you skip the old city's parking and noise, and departure day takes care of itself. Hotel Shiny Grand in Guwahati pairs that location with 35 rooms, free parking for hired cars, free Wi-Fi and a 24-hour front desk that will happily arrange your Pobitora car the evening before.
