How to Plan a Northeast India Trip from Guwahati

Short answer: Start with the season, then pick one loop. For a first trip, seven days across Assam and Meghalaya is enough: Guwahati, Kaziranga, Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki. Add Arunachal or Nagaland only with a second week. Fly into Guwahati, sleep near the airport on night one, and book the car before you land.

Northeast India is eight states, not one destination. The mistake most first-time visitors make is trying to see all of it in a week. A better trip starts with a single loop, a realistic season and one reliable base at each end. Guwahati is the natural starting point because LGBI Airport is the region's main gateway and the road corridors to Assam and Meghalaya begin there.

Start with the season, not the map

October to March is the easiest window. The air is drier, the hill roads are more stable and the parks are open. December and January are cold in the hills and can be foggy in the Brahmaputra valley, so keep a buffer around early flights. The monsoon, June to September, is not the time for a first trip if you plan to drive in the hills. Landslides, closed parks and washed-out roads are common.

If you are coming from the US or Europe, the flight usually lands in Guwahati after a long connection. Do not drive to the hills that same day. Sleep near the airport, start fresh the next morning and treat the first night as part of the trip.

Pick one loop, not eight states

A first trip should choose either Assam and Meghalaya or Assam and Arunachal. Trying to add Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram turns the holiday into a series of long drives. The classic first loop is Guwahati, Kaziranga, Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki. It covers rhinos, tea country, waterfalls and the clear Umngot river without changing hotels every night.

The second loop adds Arunachal Pradesh, usually Tawang or Ziro. That needs permits and more days. The third option is Nagaland for the Hornbill season, which is a different trip with its own dates. Pick one and leave the rest for next time.

The 7-day Assam and Meghalaya loop

Day one is arrival in Guwahati and a night near the airport. Day two drives to Kaziranga, with tea gardens on the way. Day three is the morning jeep safari and a slow afternoon. Day four is the long drive to Shillong, with a stop at Umiam Lake. Day five is Cherrapunji for the waterfalls and caves. Day six is Dawki and Mawlynnong, then back to Shillong. Day seven returns to Guwahati for the flight or a final night near the airport.

The loop works because it moves in one direction and ends where it started. If you have less than seven days, drop Kaziranga rather than rushing every stop. If you have more, add a second night in Kaziranga or a night in Shillong at the end.

The 14-day version

With two weeks, add Arunachal Pradesh after Kaziranga or after Guwahati. Tawang needs a long drive and a permit. Ziro is gentler and works well for a slower trip. A second option is to add Nagaland around the Hornbill Festival in December, but book accommodation months ahead. Do not add a third state to a two-week trip. The roads are slow, and the best moments happen when you are not racing to the next town.

Permits and paperwork

Assam and Meghalaya do not require permits for most visitors. Arunachal Pradesh does: Indian citizens generally need an Inner Line Permit, and foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit. Nagaland has its own rules for some districts. The rules and online portals change, so check the official state government site before you travel and carry printed copies.

Keep your passport, visa, ticket and permit copies in one folder. If you are travelling with a driver, send the documents ahead so the paperwork at checkpoints is quicker. Do not rely on a hotel to arrange a permit unless it has confirmed the service in writing.

Transport: a car and driver or buses

A private car with a hill-experienced driver is the simplest option for a first loop. It removes the need to negotiate each leg and lets you stop when the road opens into a view. The cost is higher than buses, but the time saved is real. Shared sumos run on many routes, and the buses are cheaper, but they fill up and do not wait for you.

Book the car for the whole loop, not leg by leg. A single driver who knows the route handles the permits, parking and fuel. Ask what is included: tolls, parking, driver night charges and fuel. Get the answer in writing. For the airport end, Hotel Shiny Grand can arrange a pickup and a car, subject to availability.

Where to sleep on the first and last night

The first and last nights should be close to LGBI Airport, not in the city centre. If your flight lands late or leaves early, a hotel in Borjhar removes a cross-city transfer from the most tiring part of the trip. Hotel Shiny Grand is about 1.7 km from Terminal 2, roughly five minutes by car, with a 24-hour front desk. Rooms start at ₹2,500, and direct bookings include breakfast and one complimentary one-way transfer (pickup or drop).

If you are doing a short hill loop, ask the front desk whether you can leave heavy luggage while you are away, and confirm the collection date. The same applies at the end: a final night near the airport is cheaper than missing a flight because a hill road ran late.

A booking order that works

First fix your dates and season. Then book the flight into Guwahati. Then book the first and last nights near the airport. Then book the car and driver. Then book the hill hotels. Permits come after the route is fixed, not before. This order prevents the common mistake of booking a hill hotel before checking whether the road is open or the permit is available.

For the full route, see the 7-day Northeast itinerary. For the airport end, see the airport hotel page and the LGBI guide. If you are starting with Kaziranga, the Kaziranga distance guide explains the drive.

FAQ

How many days do I need for Northeast India?
Seven days covers a first loop through Assam and Meghalaya. Ten to fourteen days allows Arunachal Pradesh or Nagaland, but those states deserve their own trip. Do not try to cover the whole region in a week.
Do I need permits for Northeast India?
Indian citizens generally need an Inner Line Permit for Arunachal Pradesh, and foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit. Meghalaya and Assam do not require permits for most visitors. Rules change, so check the official state portal before booking.
What is the best season for a Guwahati start?
October to March is the driest and easiest window. The monsoon, June to September, brings landslides and park closures. Winter mornings can be foggy, so keep a buffer around flights and hill drives.
Is Guwahati a good base for a first trip?
Yes. LGBI Airport is the region's main gateway, and the city sits at the start of the main road corridors. Use Guwahati for the first and last night, then travel one loop rather than backtracking.
Can Hotel Shiny Grand arrange a car and driver?
The hotel can arrange airport pickup and a car for the loop, subject to availability. Direct bookings include one complimentary one-way airport transfer (pickup or drop). Send your dates and route in advance so the team can confirm the vehicle and driver.
