Guwahati has three kinds of hotel: national chains, larger local groups, and independent properties run by their owners. The words on a booking page do not always tell you which one you are getting. This guide explains what the independent category actually means in this city, what it is good at, and the questions that separate a well-run independent from a cheap one.

1. Is the front desk staffed through the night, and what is the number?
2. What exactly does the rate include: breakfast, transfer, taxes?
3. Is the airport transfer one way or both ways?
4. What are the check-in and check-out times, and what does an early check-in cost?
5. Is there an in-house kitchen, and until what time does it serve?
6. What is the cancellation policy in writing?
7. Is parking on site, and is it free?
8. What is the actual room size and bed type?
9. Can the hotel host a function, and for how many guests?
10. Who owns the property, and who do I speak to if something goes wrong?

Breakfast, transfer and tax
