The Ultimate Northeast India Travel Guide for 2026

Short answer: Start a Northeast India trip in Guwahati, the region's main air gateway. The classic first loop is seven days across Assam and Meghalaya: Guwahati, Kaziranga, Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki. Add Arunachal Pradesh or Nagaland for a 14-day trip. October to March is the driest and easiest season.

Northeast India rewards a trip that starts simply. The region is often treated as one destination, but it is eight states with different languages, landscapes and road conditions. The first-time visitor does not need to see all of it. A good trip picks one loop, allows for slow hill roads and leaves the airport logistics to the first and last night.

Why Guwahati is the gateway

LGBI Airport in Guwahati is the region's main air gateway. Most itineraries begin here because the city sits at the western edge of the region and the highways to Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal radiate from it. Starting in Guwahati also means the first night can be close to the terminal, which matters after a long flight.

Guwahati itself deserves a day. The Kamakhya Temple, the riverfront and the Brahmaputra are the obvious stops. The city is also where you sort the practical things: cash, a local SIM, a car and any last-minute supplies. The seven-day itinerary builds this into the first day.

When to go

October to March is the dry season and the most comfortable window for road travel, wildlife safaris and views. December and January are cool in the plains and cold in the hills. April and May are hotter and more humid, but the rhino parks remain open and the crowds are thinner.

The monsoon, June to September, is a different trip. The rain is heavy, hill roads can slide, and Kaziranga closes for the season. It can be beautiful for tea country and waterfalls, but it is not the time for a tight itinerary. Build in spare days if you travel then.

The 7-day first loop

The classic first loop is Guwahati, Kaziranga, Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki. Two nights in Guwahati, two at Kaziranga, and three across Meghalaya is a sensible split. You see the one-horned rhino, the tea gardens, the living root bridges and the clear water at Dawki without changing hotels every night.

The driving is the constraint. The Kaziranga leg is a long morning, and the Shillong leg is longer. A private car with a hill-experienced driver is easier than piecing together buses, especially with luggage. The full day-by-day route is in the seven-day loop guide.

The 14-day version

With two weeks, add either Arunachal Pradesh or Nagaland. Arunachal brings high passes, monasteries and the Ziro valley; Nagaland brings the Hornbill festival in December and hill villages. Do not try to add both to a two-week trip. The roads are slow and the weather can close a route.

A 14-day route can run Guwahati, Kaziranga, Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki, then a flight or a long drive to the second state. If you add Arunachal, check the permit and the road conditions before you fix the dates. The region's distance is measured in hours, not kilometres.

Permits and paperwork

Permit rules depend on the state and your nationality. Assam and Meghalaya are straightforward for most visitors. Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland have inner line or protected area requirements, and foreign nationals may need a different permit. Check the current rule for your passport before you book, and carry printed copies of what you need.

This is planning advice, not a legal guarantee. Rules change. Confirm with the state government or your tour operator close to the travel date.

Getting around

A private car is the most efficient way to cover a loop with luggage. Shared sumo services run on the main hill routes and are cheaper, but they leave when full and stop often. Flights connect Guwahati with a few regional towns, but the network is thin and weather can delay them.

For a first trip, book one car for the whole loop rather than renegotiating in every town. It costs more than buses, but it buys time and flexibility. Ask the driver whether the route is comfortable with your luggage and whether he has driven it in the season you are travelling.

Where to sleep on the first and last night

The first and last nights are airport nights. A hotel near LGBI Airport removes the risk of a missed flight or a tired cross-city drive. Hotel Shiny Grand is 1.7 km from Terminal 2, about five minutes by car, with a 24-hour desk, 35 rooms and an in-house kitchen. Rooms start at ₹2,500, and direct bookings include breakfast and one complimentary one-way transfer (pickup or drop).

Store heavy luggage at the hotel if you are doing a short hill loop and returning. The desk can hold bags, and the airport side is the right side of the city for a western exit. The airport hotel page has the details.

What to pack

Pack layers. The plains are warm and the hills are cool, and the temperature can change by ten degrees in a day. Bring a light rain shell even in winter, comfortable walking shoes and a power bank. Cash is useful in hill villages and at small counters, even where UPI works.

Carry any medication you need, a copy of your permits and a printed list of your bookings. Mobile signal is good in towns and patchy on some hill roads. Download offline maps before the long drives.

Northeast India is not a checklist. It is a set of long roads, small towns and big landscapes. Give it time, start in Guwahati and do not try to see everything in one trip. The first loop is enough to know whether you will come back.

If Kaziranga is on the route, the Guwahati to Kaziranga distance guide sets out the drive, the road conditions and where to break the journey. If you want a gentler first week, the tea gardens of Assam make an easy day from Guwahati.
