Northeast India for First-Timers, A 7-Day Loop

Seven days is enough for a first taste of Northeast India: two days in Guwahati, two at Kaziranga, and three across Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki, a road loop of roughly 900 km that starts and ends at LGBI Airport. You'll see one-horned rhinos, India's tallest plunge waterfall and a river so clear the boats seem to levitate, without ever changing your base logic.

This northeast India travel guide follows the exact loop we plan most often for guests at Hotel Shiny Grand, our hotel minutes from the airport. One car, one driver, no backtracking, here is how the week works.

Why start and end in Guwahati?

Guwahati is the only real gateway to the region, LGBI Airport handles the vast majority of Northeast flights, and every highway into Meghalaya, upper Assam and Arunachal radiates from the city. Fighting that geography means wasted hours; using it means your first and last nights are stress-free.

Our stopover hotel guide explains why nearly every Northeast itinerary passes through Guwahati twice.

There's a connectivity point too: Guwahati is where SIM cards, forex, ATMs and last-minute shopping all work at full strength. Sort them on day one, because everything gets patchier as the hills rise, Shillong is fine, Cherrapunji is thinner, and Dawki's border villages are cash-and-signal lotteries. Ten minutes of admin in the city saves an hour of hunting later in the week.

What does the 7-day loop look like day by day?

DayBaseHighlightsDriving
1GuwahatiArrive at LGBI, Kamakhya Temple, Brahmaputra sunset cruiseCity only
2KazirangaDrive out after breakfast, tea gardens en route, evening at leisure~193 km, 4–4.5 hrs
3KazirangaMorning jeep safari in the Central Range, optional second safariPark only
4ShillongLong drive day via Guwahati, Umiam Lake stop before Shillong~290 km, 7–8 hrs
5CherrapunjiNohkalikai Falls, Seven Sisters, Mawsmai Cave~55 km, 2 hrs
6ShillongDawki boat ride, Mawlynnong village, return to Shillong~180 km round trip
7GuwahatiDescend NH6, afternoon flight or a final night near the airport~100 km, 3–3.5 hrs

Day 4 is the one genuinely long day. If you'd rather split it, drop the second Kaziranga safari and overnight in Guwahati instead.

What will the week cost?

For two people sharing a private car, budget roughly ₹45,000–70,000 total excluding flights, the range depends on hotel class and safari add-ons. Indicative components:

All figures are approximate and move with season. Our full budget breakdown itemises every cost line for a week like this.

Food is part of the budget maths and one of the trip's quiet pleasures. An Assamese thali in Guwahati runs ₹150–300, Kaziranga's highway dhabas serve excellent fish curries for less, and Shillong adds Khasi staples like jadoh alongside every kind of café. Budget roughly ₹600–1,000 per person per day to eat very well without trying.

What should you book before you land?

Three things reward advance booking; everything else can be arranged on arrival.

  1. Kaziranga safari permits, December–January weekends sell out. Book as soon as your dates fix.
  2. Your car and driver, one vehicle for the whole loop beats renegotiating in every town. We arrange this from the hotel with drivers who run these routes weekly.
  3. First and last night's room, flights into LGBI often land late, and a 24-hour front desk minutes from the terminal removes all arrival stress.

Meghalaya needs no permits for Indian or foreign tourists; only Arunachal extensions (Tawang, Ziro) require an Inner Line Permit.

Can you shorten or extend the loop?

Easily. With 5 days, drop Kaziranga and run Guwahati → Shillong → Cherrapunji → Dawki → Guwahati; you keep all of Meghalaya's highlights. With 10 days, add Pobitora on day one and two nights in Ziro or Tawang, though Arunachal roads deserve their own trip.

How do you make the logistics painless?

The loop succeeds or fails on transport. A single reliable car with a hill-experienced driver turns seven days of logistics into a holiday; patchwork taxis turn it into negotiation practice.

From Hotel Shiny Grand we run airport pickup, one-car packages for exactly this loop, and standalone legs like the Guwahati–Shillong taxi if you're mixing and matching. Rooms, car and route planning come from one WhatsApp thread, book direct and tell us your dates, and we'll have the car waiting when you land.

FAQ

Is 7 days enough for Northeast India?
Seven days covers Assam and Meghalaya's headline sights comfortably: Guwahati's temples, a Kaziranga jeep safari, Shillong, Cherrapunji's waterfalls and the clear river at Dawki. It is not enough to add Arunachal Pradesh or Nagaland, treat those as separate trips of 5–7 days each.
How much does a 7-day Northeast India trip cost for two people?
Roughly ₹45,000–70,000 for two people sharing a private car, excluding flights. That covers a dedicated car for the week (₹21,000–28,000), mid-range hotels, a Kaziranga jeep safari (₹4,500–6,500 per jeep plus fees) and meals. Figures are indicative and rise in the December–January peak.
Do I need any permits for Assam and Meghalaya?
No. Indian and foreign tourists need no permits for Assam or Meghalaya. An Inner Line Permit (ILP) is only required if you extend into Arunachal Pradesh for places like Tawang or Ziro, and it can be applied for online before you travel.
What is the best season for this 7-day loop?
November to April. Kaziranga's safaris run only in these months, Dawki's Umngot river is at its clearest, and the hill roads are dry. June to September closes the parks and muddies the river, though Meghalaya's waterfalls are at their most powerful then.

Ready to run the loop?
