How the planner decides
Most trips into the Northeast start and end at Guwahati's LGBI airport. The question that wrecks itineraries is simple: can you land and keep going, or will you end up on a mountain road after dark?
The planner works it out from your landing time. It adds about 45 minutes to get out of the airport, then the usual drive time to where you're heading. For hill destinations like Shillong, Tawang or Ziro, if that puts you on the road after sunset, it tells you to sleep near the airport and leave at first light. Sunset here is early, around 4:30 pm in December.
The flight home gets the opposite treatment. It works back from the time you need to be at the terminal (2 hours before a domestic flight, 3 for international) and adds an hour of slack. If that means leaving the hills before dawn, or the route is long or in landslide season, it tells you to come down the day before. Missing a flight costs far more than one hotel night.
One more thing: Guwahati now has two terminals. Most domestic flights moved to the new Terminal 2 in 2026, and IndiGo moved there in July. Check your boarding pass for the terminal before you leave.
Drive times, permits and best months
Road times are typical figures from the airport side of Guwahati in normal conditions. Rain, roadworks and traffic stretch them.

| Sohra (Cherrapunji) Meghalaya | 5–6 h | No Inner Line Permit. Your stay is registered by your hotel or homestay. | Oct–Apr (waterfalls peak Jun–Sep, but so does road risk) |
| Dawki (Umngot River) Meghalaya | 6–7.5 h overnight at Shillong | No Inner Line Permit. Carry photo ID; this is a border area. | Nov–Apr (clearest water) |
| Mawlynnong Meghalaya | 6–7 h overnight at Shillong | No Inner Line Permit. Your stay is registered by your accommodation. | Oct–Apr |
| Kaziranga National Park Assam | ~250 km, 4.5–5.5 h | Park entry ticket and safari booking. Carry the photo ID you booked with. | Nov–Apr |
| Tawang Arunachal Pradesh | 12–16 h overnight at Bomdila or Dirang | Tourist e-ILP required (up to 14 days; under-14s exempt). Apply online before you travel; it's checked at Bhalukpong. | Mar–Oct (Oct–Nov is clearest; Sela Pass gets snow in winter) |
| Ziro Valley Arunachal Pradesh | 7–10 h | Tourist e-ILP required (up to 14 days). Apply online before you travel. | Mar–May, Sep–Nov |
| Kamakhya Temple Assam | ~20 km, 0.7–1 h | None. | Oct–Apr (crowds peak at Ambubachi and Navratri) |

Fog is the other one. From mid December to mid February, early-morning flights at Guwahati are delayed or cancelled more often than at any other time of year. On 3 January 2025 alone, 16 flights were cancelled and 30 delayed. If you're flying out on a winter morning, sleep close to the airport and keep the day after free if you can.
Why we built this
We run a 35-room hotel 450 metres from Terminal 1 and 1.7 km from Terminal 2, in Borjhar. A lot of our guests reach us at midnight after a delayed flight, or check in the evening before a 6 am departure because they didn't want to risk the drive down from Shillong that morning. We wrote down the rules we give them at the front desk and turned them into this planner.
If the planner says you don't need us, believe it. If it says you do, we'd be glad to have you: breakfast, one complimentary one-way airport transfer (pickup or drop) and late checkout to 2 pm come with every direct booking, and you can leave big bags with us while you're in the hills.

Questions travellers ask us
Do I need to stay a night in Guwahati before going to Shillong?
Only if you land late. Shillong is about 3 to 4 hours by road and the last stretch is a hill road. If you'd arrive after sunset, which is around 4:30 pm in winter, sleep near the airport and leave in the morning. A morning landing can usually drive straight up.
How long does it take to get from Guwahati airport to Tawang?
Plan on two days. The official estimate is 14 to 16 hours of driving, and most people break the trip at Bomdila or Dirang. Snow on Sela Pass in winter and landslides in the monsoon can add a day, so come back to Guwahati at least a day before your flight home.
Can I land in Guwahati and reach Kaziranga the same day?
Yes, if you land by early afternoon. The drive is roughly 4 to 5 hours on a flat highway. Morning safaris start early, so many people arrive the evening before. The park closes to visitors through the monsoon, roughly June to September, so check the season first.
How early should I reach Guwahati airport?
Airlines ask for 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international one. From Hotel Shiny Grand the drive to the terminal is about 5 minutes, so for a 6 am flight you can leave around 3:50 am instead of 2:30 am from the city.
Is there a hotel within walking distance of Guwahati airport?
Hotel Shiny Grand is about 450 metres from Terminal 1 and 1.7 km from Terminal 2 in Borjhar. Direct bookings include one complimentary one-way airport transfer (pickup or drop), free breakfast, and late checkout until 2 pm.
What should I do if my Guwahati flight is cancelled because of fog?
Fog season runs roughly mid December to mid February and hits early-morning flights hardest. Ask the airline to rebook you first, then get a room close to the airport so you can be back at the terminal quickly. We keep late checkout free until 2 pm for exactly this.
Do I need a permit for Arunachal Pradesh or Nagaland?
Indian citizens from outside these states need an Inner Line Permit for both. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit for Arunachal, arranged through an approved tour operator, and apply on Nagaland's ILP portal in the tourist category. Meghalaya has no ILP. Apply on the official state portals. Fees and processing times quoted online often conflict, so trust the portal over blogs.
Is the planner free, and do you store my trip details?
It's free and there's no sign-up. The plan is worked out in your browser. Nothing reaches us unless you choose to send it on WhatsApp, and even then you see the message before you send it.
