Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival 2026: Guwahati Guide
The Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival runs on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 November 2026. If you are flying in, you land in Guwahati, not Shillong, and that changes how you should plan the trip.
We run a hotel 1.7 km from Guwahati airport, so here is the honest version up front. Shillong is about three hours away by road. We are not a hotel for the festival itself. We are useful for the night you land, and for the night before you fly home.

- Cherry bloom: the wild Himalayan cherry usually flowers around October and November. Timing shifts from year to year, so treat the bloom as likely, not guaranteed.
Getting from Guwahati to Shillong
Guwahati airport (LGBI) is about 128 km from Shillong by road, according to the East Khasi Hills district administration. Plan on roughly three hours of driving as a baseline. The road goes via Jorabat, Nongpoh and Umiam, and a stop at Umiam Lake or a slow stretch of traffic can add time.
From landing to your Shillong door, a pre-booked car usually takes 3.5 to 4 hours once you count baggage and the airport exit. The festival ground is a further 30 minutes or so from central Shillong. For your options:
- Pre-booked private car: the simplest option with bags. Our taxi fare guide lists indicative 2026 fares, about ₹2,200 to ₹5,000 or more depending on the vehicle.
- Shared taxi or Sumo: cheaper, around ₹1,000 a seat, but it leaves when it fills and usually starts in the city. See airport to Shillong directly.

Guwahati as your base: a 3 to 4 day plan
Flying in and out of Guwahati means two road trips of about three hours each, and the one that matters most is the return. Here is a plan that keeps your flights safe.
Thursday 19 November: land in Guwahati
- Land at LGBI and be at the hotel in about five minutes. If you booked direct, you can use your one complimentary one-way airport transfer (pickup or drop) for this pickup, or keep it for the way out.
- Rest, eat and sleep properly. Then start for Shillong in daylight tomorrow, instead of climbing the highway late at night after a tiring flight.
Friday 20 November: drive to Shillong
- Leave in the morning. Aim to reach Shillong by early afternoon, drop your bags and head to the grounds for the 2:00 PM start.
- Book your Shillong stay as soon as you have tickets. We do not know how full town will be, so do not leave it late.
Saturday 21 November: day two
- Festival day two. If you want to see the blossom trees, the sources we read name Ward's Lake, the Polo Ground and the golf course as places to look. Go in daylight, before the music starts.
Sunday 22 November: back to Guwahati
- Leave Shillong in the morning and come straight down to the airport side. Do not drive down on the day of a flight if you can avoid it.
- Check in at the hotel, rest, and have an early night. The front desk is open 24 hours.
Monday 23 November: fly out
- Take breakfast and check out late, up to 3 hours past the normal 11:00 AM, so 2:00 PM, at no extra charge. Use the one complimentary one-way transfer (pickup or drop) to the terminal if you did not use it on arrival. The airport is 450 m from Terminal 1 and about 5 minutes from Terminal 2.
Short on time? Cut it to three days: land Thursday, drive up Friday for day one of the festival, come back Saturday morning, sleep at the hotel and fly on Sunday. You lose day two, but you keep a buffer.
Cold weather and a road buffer for your flight
Shillong sits in the hills and late November evenings there are cold. The festival is outdoors and runs into the night, so pack a proper jacket and something warm for your head and hands. Guwahati is noticeably warmer.
On road time, treat three hours as the minimum. Add an hour for traffic, rain or a stop, and add more if you are heading to a flight. Where to stay: Guwahati or Shillong
Stay in Shillong for the festival nights. The grounds are about 30 minutes from the centre of town, and you do not want a three-hour drive after a late show. Hotel Shiny Grand cannot help with that part.
Where we do help is the two Guwahati nights either side of the trip:
- The arrival night, if your flight lands in the afternoon or evening and you would rather climb to Shillong after a rest.
- The night before you fly home, so the road is behind you and the flight is five minutes away.
- Any early flight, since the front desk is open 24 hours.
